Job Description: Founding Engineer

Role Overview
We are looking for someone who can operate as a technical counterpart to the founding team—someone who brings strong judgment, can challenge decisions when needed, and contributes meaningfully to how systems are designed and built.

This role involves a high degree of ownership across architecture, engineering, and client interactions. You will be expected to not just participate in decisions, but help shape them.

Key Responsibilities

  • Architecture & Technical Direction

    • Actively shape system architecture and technical direction across projects

    • Bring clarity to ambiguous problem spaces and define practical approaches

    • Evaluate trade-offs with a strong sense of long-term maintainability and real-world constraints

  • Engineering & Code Quality

    • Contribute to core parts of the codebase with high standards of quality

    • Set the bar for code reviews and engineering practices

    • Identify and address systemic issues, not just surface-level bugs

  • Mentorship & Team Development

    • Mentor interns and junior team members with a focus on developing independent thinking

    • Help build a culture of ownership, clarity, and thoughtful decision-making

  • Client & Stakeholder Engagement

    • Lead or co-lead conversations with clients across nonprofits, government, and startups

    • Understand underlying needs and constraints—not just stated requirements

    • Translate complex technical decisions into clear, structured communication

  • Working in Ambiguous Environments

    • Take ownership of loosely defined problems and drive them toward clarity and execution

    • Operate effectively within constraints typical of gov-tech and nonprofit ecosystems

What We’re Looking For

  • Strong experience building and owning real-world systems end-to-end

  • Proven ability to make and defend architectural decisions

  • Comfort operating with a high degree of autonomy and responsibility

  • Ability to challenge ideas constructively and improve outcomes

  • Experience working directly with clients or stakeholders

  • Clear, structured communication—both technical and non-technical

  • Curiosity and openness to exploring new tools, especially in AI

Nice to Have

  • Experience with Frappe or similar frameworks

  • Exposure to government or public sector systems

  • Experience in early-stage or resource-constrained environments

How We Work

  • Small team, high ownership, minimal hierarchy

  • Decisions are collaborative, but expectations are high

  • We value clarity, simplicity, and long-term thinking

  • Strong opinions are welcome—when backed by reasoning

Closing Note
This role is best suited for someone who enjoys taking ownership, influencing decisions, and working closely across technology, people, and context. If you’re looking to operate as a technical leader without rigid boundaries—and are comfortable navigating ambiguity while maintaining high standards—you’ll likely find this role a strong fit.
